back in january we found out that one of london’s newest skyscrapers, the walkie talkie (aka 20 fenchurch street), was opening a free sky garden. we immediately booked tickets for mid-march, hoping for clear skies & good views. well, last weekend was pretty cloudy but we were still excited to see london from 35 floors up!
stepping out through the bar area & onto the balcony, the immediate views are incredibly impressive: the shard stares you right in the eye & the whole thames lies beneath you, so close you could almost dip your toes in it. we spent a fair amount of time out there watching the traffic crawl across the bridges & the boats chugging up & down the river.
next we wandered through the 3 levels of the garden itself. it’s pretty but, it must be said, fairly small so if you’re the horticultural type & there for the fauna don’t be too disappointed (‘sky lounge’ or ‘sky bar’ would’ve been more apt but they’re already taken so y’know). i’m a fern fan so it was all good.
from the back of the building there’s a fantastic view of the other new addition to london’s skyline, the cheesegrater, & that old classic the gherkin. i do love this place. in any other major city i’ve visited you’d pay crazy amounts for these views. speaking of which, we’ve just booked to go back to italy in september! do you have any tips for rome, naples, the amalfi coast, lecce & the surrounding areas?!
